Recurrent's 2025 Longest Range EVs were selected using the unadjusted EPA efficiency filings and the usable battery capacity of each vehicle.

Nissan LEAF » Longest Range Small Electric Car

The 2025 Nissan LEAF is an affordable electric hatchback offering two powertrain options to suit different driving needs. The base S model features a 147-hp electric motor paired with a 40-kWh battery, delivering an EPA-estimated range of 149 miles. The SV Plus trim upgrades to a 214-hp motor and a 60-kWh battery, extending the range to 212 miles. Standard safety features include Nissan Safety Shield 360, encompassing automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning, and lane departure warning. The SV Plus trim adds ProPILOT Assist, offering semi-autonomous driving capabilities for enhanced highway comfort. Inside, the LEAF boasts a spacious cabin with comfortable seating for five and a cargo capacity of 23.6 cubic feet, making it a practical choice for daily commutes and longer journeys alike.

Tesla Model S » Longest Range Electric Sedan

The first Tesla Model S hit the road in 2012 with an EPA range of 265 miles per charge. Newer models can get up to 405 miles of range per charge. It is an all-electric, luxury sedan that Tesla considers its flagship production vehicle and still defines EV performance with its Plaid configuration. The cabin features a minimalist design centered around a 17-inch touchscreen infotainment system, accommodates five passengers and offers a decent cargo capacity for a sedan. Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Methodology Notes: 

Typical Range: Typical Range is a proprietary Recurrent value that gives an estimate of how far a new EV should go on a full charge under average conditions. For many models, the Typical Range is different from the EPA range, which is calculated using a strict protocol that includes simulated city driving and highway driving on a “car treadmill,” or dynamometer. 

Winter Range: Electric vehicles typically experience a reduction in driving range during cold weather, averaging about a 20% decrease compared to optimal conditions. This reduction is primarily due to the need for battery energy to heat the cabin and the decreased efficiency of battery chemistry in low temperatures. For years, Recurrent has been observing how EVs perform in the winter in order to develop our own winter range rankings. 

Price cap: All Recurrent awards, other than the Luxury Vehicle segment, are awarded to EVs with an MSRP below $80,000.

Tips to optimize your range: 

  1. Preconditioning your battery so it can perform best out of the gate
  2. Drive slower -- EVs are more efficient on city streets than on the highway
  3. Preheat your car in the winter and try to rely on seat and steering wheel warmers
  4. Make sure your tires have the right air pressure
  5. Reduce unnecessary weight by taking out heavy items you don't need
  6. Plan routes carefully using your vehicle’s navigation (or Google) which often allow you to optimize for efficiency
  7. Minimize accessory use such as high-volume audio or security devices when not necessary
  8. Use eco mode when available
  9. Consider taking off roof racks or tire racks when not in use
